One of the best ways I've found for explaining the basic structure of astrology is through the metaphor of a play.  

In this, you can think of the Planets as the actors performing their parts,
the Signs as the costumes or roles they are playing,
and the Houses as the stage where this performance is being carried out.
These three pieces are the What, How and Where of your personal map.

PLANETS  (What energy is being used)

Sun - Identity, power, purpose and what area of life you give the most attention to.
Moon - Emotions, inner self and what comforts you. Where you take in information on an intuitive level.
Mercury - Communication and how you think.
Venus - Love, beauty, what you are attracted to and how you show love.
Mars - Power, ambition, drive, and also plays a big part in what you're attracted to.
Jupiter - Expansion, luck and what area of life you grow the most in.
Saturn - Structure, constriction, Karmic debt and lessons. This energy if used maturely helps you grow deeply as well.
Uranus - Unexpected change and rebelliousness. The area of life you're the most unique and unwilling to fit the mold.  
Neptune - Compassion, confusion, imagination and spirituality.
Pluto - Transformation, sex and power. What transforms you after you have lived in the darkness for a good long while.

SIGNS  (How energy is being used)

Aires - Starts things - The energy that will give you the confidence to go ahead and do it! If maybe a little impulsively.
Taurus - Builds things - The energy that will help you stay the course and slowly but steadily go in the direction you want to go.
Gemini - Talks about things - The energy that will help you discover lots of fun new people, places and ideas.
Cancer - Nurtures things - The energy that lets you know what you need to feel safe and what you do on a purely emotional level.
Leo - Dramatizes things - The energy that will make you want attention for your gifts and talents!
Virgo - Organizes things -The energy that makes you want to keep things in order, and also serve those you love.
Libra - Balances things -The energy that loves harmony and doing things with another person. Cooperation and relationships.
Scorpio - Transforms things -The energy that will make you obsessive and possessive but also intensely powerful.
Sagittarius - Thinks about things -The energy that makes you want to go explore the unknown, through travel or books.
Capricorn - Leads things -The energy that makes you want to do what is expected of you, and also teach what you know.
Aquarius - Changes things -The energy that rebels against rules and wants to be totally different from everyone else.
Pisces - Dreams about things - The energy that wants to merge with everyone and find the deeper purpose.

1st House - Identity, what you look like and the filter you see the world through.
2nd House - Resources and what you hold valuable.
3rd House - Communication, siblings and short journeys.
4th House - Home, comfort, where you get stuck and good old mom.
5th house - Self expression, creativity, children and romance.
6th House - Daily routines, service, work and health.
7th House - Relationships and what you project onto others without knowing it.
8th House - Transformation, power plays and other people's resources.
9th House - Knowledge, intuition and travel.
10th House - Reputation, what you are meant to do in society, how others see you before they know you, and good old dad.
11th House - Friends, hopes, ambitions and how you relate to society at large.
12th House - Karma, what's beyond your control, where you're spiritually inclined and your subconscious.

ASPECTS (How all the energies are relating to each other)

Conjunct - (planets are right next to each other) - energies are combined.
Opposition - (planets are 180 degrees each other) - energies are opposing each other and need to find balance.
Square - (planets are 90 degrees away from each other) - energies are conflicting and a change needs to happen.
Trine - (planets are 120 degrees away from each other) - energies are in harmony and come naturally.
Sextile - (planets are 60 degrees away from each other) - energies work well together but it takes some effort.
